Delhi NEP 2026: New Age Rules for Nursery, KG & Class 1

The education landscape in Delhi is all set for a major transformation. With the Government of Delhi aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, preschools, playschools, and kindergartens are about to see a complete restructuring of the Foundational Stage.

This reform, announced through the Directorate of Education (DoE) circular in October 2025, will come into effect from the 2026–27 academic session. And for parents, teachers, and school administrators, this means a big shift in how children will be admitted, how old they need to be for each class, and how they progress year by year.

In this article, we’ll break down what the new NEP guidelines mean, why they’re important, and how they’ll affect you if you’re planning your child’s early education in Delhi.

Delhi NEP 2026

Why a New Age Structure for Delhi Schools?

For years, Delhi schools admitted children into Nursery at 3+, KG at 4+, and Class 1 at 5+. While this seemed convenient, child development experts often argued that rushing children into formal schooling too early wasn’t healthy.

The NEP 2020 envisioned a 5-year foundational stage: three years of preschool (Nursery, Lower KG, Upper KG) followed by two years of primary (Class 1 and Class 2). The idea is simple:

  • Let children play, explore, and socialize during their early years.
  • Delay heavy academics until children are developmentally ready at age 6.

Delhi has now adopted this vision. From 2026–27 onwards, Class 1 admission will only be for children aged 6+ years. This brings Delhi in line with many progressive education systems worldwide, where school readiness is considered more important than starting academics early.

New Admission Age Structure

Here’s how the new system looks:

Class New Nomenclature Minimum Age (as on 31st March) Maximum Age
Nursery Balvatika 1 / Pre-School 1 3+ years up to 4 years
Lower KG Balvatika 2 / Pre-School 2 4+ years up to 5 years
Upper KG Balvatika 3 / Pre-School 3 5+ years up to 6 years
Class 1 Primary Stage 6+ years up to 7 years

📌 Note: Schools can allow up to 1 month relaxation in both directions if needed, at the discretion of the Head of School

Phase-Wise Implementation (2026–27 to 2029–30)

The Delhi government is careful not to disrupt the education of children already enrolled. So, the changes will roll out gradually:

Phase 1: 2026–27

  • Nursery admissions at 3+ years.
  • KG (age 4+) will still exist for one last transitional year.
  • Class 1 will continue at 5+ years for children promoted from KG.

Phase 2: 2027–28

  • Lower KG (4+ years) and Upper KG (5+ years) introduced.
  • Nursery students of 2026–27 move to Lower KG.
  • KG students of 2026–27 promoted to Class 1 at 5+.

Phase 3: 2028–29 onwards

  • Full NEP structure in place.
  • Class 1 admissions only for 6+ years.
  • A complete progression from Nursery → Lower KG → Upper KG → Class 1.

👉 By 2029–30, every child entering Class 1 in Delhi schools will be at least 6 years old, as per NEP norms.

How This Impacts Parents

For parents, this change means replanning admissions and being more mindful of age cut-offs.

  • If your child is 2.5 years old in 2026, they’ll have to wait until the next session to enter Nursery.
  • If your child is already in KG in 2025–26, they’ll move into Class 1 at 5+ years in 2026–27 — unaffected by the new rules.
  • If your child is younger than 3 years by 31st March 2026, they’ll have to wait for Nursery admission in 2027.

On the positive side, children will now have more time for play-based learning in preschools before formal academics begin. This means less pressure, more readiness, and a healthier transition into Class 1.

How This Impacts Schools

Schools will need to:

  • Restructure preschool sections to include Nursery, Lower KG, and Upper KG.
  • Communicate clearly with parents about admission eligibility and progression.
  • Adjust their curriculum and teaching methods in line with NEP’s focus on play, discovery, and early foundational skills.

Private schools, in particular, may face challenges in the transition years (2026–27, 2027–28), as they’ll need to run mixed structures before the full model settles in. But long term, the change will bring uniformity across Delhi schools — reducing confusion for parents and ensuring fairness in admissions.

Benefits of the New NEP Guidelines

  1. Right Age for Class 1: Children will now enter Class 1 only at 6+ years, ensuring they’re emotionally and cognitively ready.
  2. Play-Based Early Years: Nursery, LKG, and UKG will focus on activity-based learning instead of rushing academics.
  3. Uniformity Across Schools: Government, aided, and private schools will all follow the same system, reducing confusion for parents.
  4. Alignment with Global Practices: Many countries start formal schooling at 6. Delhi now joins this trend.
  5. Reduced Academic Stress: The extra year in preschool allows children to develop social, motor, and language skills before tackling structured academics.

A Parent’s Perspective

Imagine your child at 3 years old. At this age, their world revolves around toys, friends, colors, and stories. Forcing them into formal writing and math lessons is often overwhelming.

Now imagine the same child at 6 years old. They can express themselves better, sit through longer activities, and show curiosity about numbers and letters. That’s the kind of readiness the NEP wants to encourage.

As one parent in Delhi put it:

“I was always worried about my daughter being pushed into Class 1 at just 5 years old. This new system gives me relief — she’ll get to enjoy her childhood and be more confident when she starts formal learning.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Will this affect my child already studying in KG?

No. Children enrolled in 2025–26 will continue normally and move to Class 1 at 5+.

2. Is this rule for private schools also?

Yes. The circular clearly states it applies to all schools under DoE Delhi — government, aided, and recognized private institutions.

3. What if my child misses the cut-off by a few days?

Schools can allow up to 1-month relaxation. Beyond that, you’ll need to wait for the next session.

4. Why is 6 years the right age for Class 1?

At this age, children are better prepared developmentally — they can focus longer, follow instructions, and cope with academics without stress.

5. Does this mean preschool fees will increase?

Not necessarily. Schools may restructure classes, but fee regulation will still apply to recognized institutions.
